  • @live has a hybrid alpha-symbolic name, a chic interior, a central location and a decent menu with some standout items.Reminiscent of a stylish downtown New York bar, @live is also more intimate: red brick walls embellished with gold accents, burnished leather-benched booths, wooden tables and chairs downstairs, armchairs upstairs and mellow lighting. We ordered a mango twister mocktail (Rs 150), which turned out to be a delicious sweet-sour mix of aam panna, lime, khus and a wonderfully thick banana smoothie. The menu is similar to Q’BA’s and more appropriate to a bar: shorter, with a greater emphasis on appetisers than on its main dishes. As we waited for our food, we filled out a song request card and watched the band. It’s always nice to hear live music and the band seems capable. The service is friendly enough as well. The mozzarella fingers (Rs 200) turned out to be lovely and gooey and the apricot-glazed lamb satay (Rs 250) with peanut sauce was decent – though a trifle chewy and lukewarm. The chicken lasagna (Rs 275) had an unusual delicate herbed flavour, but otherwise was nothing to write home about. The @live house salad with prawns (Rs 310) was disappointing – the “Lebanese croutons” were nothing more than tasty garlic bread, and the peppers, onions, tomato and lollorossa lettuce hardly benefited from the honey-mustard dressing. If the @live maas is any relative of Q’BA’s tender, slow-cooked version, we probably would have been happier trying that or a pizza. The cappuccino (Rs 95) and apple pie with ice cream (Rs 150) at least ended the meal on a good note, though both were formulaic. The same goes for the slightly dry American brownie with ice cream (Rs 150). It’s this predictability that is @live’s biggest challenge.
